I passed my 220-701 last week, with a score of 695. I passed my 220-702 with a score of 700 today! I dont think my scores are that great, but I am glad I passed.

I took a class at my local college to prep for my A+, bought the "complete guide to A+, seventh edition" (Mike Mayers) book, and watched free professor messer videos.

Also, an A+ Cheat sheet I downloaded off of here, helped me a lot!

I think the 220-702 was a little hard then the 701, but a lot of the questions were exactly the same or similar.

My Question is, how do I receive my certification now? Do I contact comptia? will they mail it to me?

my 2nd Question is, what exactly is ther certification? Is it a card that goes in your wallet? and/or a certification, like a hs deploma?

I already have Cisco Packet Tracer 5.3.
I already have GNS3 installed and working.

However, I was thinking about buying the Boson NetSim 8.0 packages primarily for their Lab Workbooks.
I see a lot of free lab workbooks for the CCNA collective, but rarely see any w/ labs broken down by ICND1/ICND2. On top of that, I'm aware that a lot of free material is often old or incomplete. Also, there's the old adage of "You get what you pay for."

For 1) People who have recently passed the CCENT or 2) People who have bought the Boson NetSim 8.0 packages and are able to review it - do you think paying, essentially just for lab workbooks, would be worth the price tag?

I'm hoping to sit the exam in 2-3 weeks. I've been studying for a while, but I don't feel confident at tackling the actual exam just yet.

Last night I'm in class with a buddy of mine, we are on the same degree path. He mentioned a month or so ago he had gone on a job interview. They called last night and offered him the position... $44K for an internship. No certs... no degree... some minor experience.

This got me to thinking.. what would I do if I were in this position.

He isn't in a horrible place in life... works part time... goes to school full time. He turned the job down. We both only have one more year to go to complete our degrees(BS tech Management). He said he was "all in" to complete the degree and if he took the job he might not finish school.

Personally ... I would have taken the position and finished school over the next year or two with night classes. I'm older and a little more stable financially. I think... the experience would have possibly trumped the degree at least for a period of time? Meaning.. the degree might come in to play later on in the career when managerial positions are on the table or something along those lines. But, for now, just starting out in the IT world, I think this would have been a great opportunity. I respect his decision, to each their own.

Of course, we all are in different places in our lives but out of just curiosity sake... what would you do?

Hi everyone,

I've had this happen twice now so thought I would post this up.

I'm configuring a basic firewall using CCP and I've selected my inside and outside interfaces and I was under the impression that it would create a rule that states any inside source addresses that try to come back in will be dropped? but I seem to have the opposite going on?

temp.jpg

So this is saying anything going from inside to outside with 210.1.1.0/24 going to anything will be dropped?

I'm confused by this.

From my reading I understand that you wouldn't want your inside addresses (10.1.1.0/24) trying to come from the outside right?

Based on my failed attempt this morning, and yes painful, the only relief right now is writing it out here, and hope this might help others. This is probably going to ramble on too much...sorry in advance. (I hope i can edit this after i post it ;) )

The CASP cert is meant to be an indication of one's ability to scope out solutions mainly within a large enterprise with architectural and project/tech-managerial planning skills/knowledge. It wants you to have enough knowledge of the available techniques (maybe not REAL hard technical stuff but it's the clever application of the techniques that matters in this cert) along with a knowing the potential impact of a VAST array of constraints (cost, risk, system performance, compliance rqmts, org restructuring, system/app layout, employee acceptance, attack environment...did i miss any?). So you may need a good dose of experience dealing with these types of scenarios, or if not, then a good ability to solve logic puzzles (that may trip you up with too much semi-related info), plus sharp reading skills. Maybe CISSP exam is the same way, not sure.

I only have sec+ cert and more than 10 years of IT experience, but too little, so far, in InfoSec (IAM/PKI/SSO app support/monitoring in this past year, but that's it). I'm more of an general system/app support guy (with some java-coding/dev). But, thought i could overcome lack of experience with studying my eyes out using MGH (good) and Sybex (not quite as good) books. Got fairly good at practice questions but no luck this time. MGH is a well written book and hits the topics well and it will suffice for many of you I'm sure. But it's style of questions seemed to reinforce my (lazy) style of reading (in a static knowledge way, if that makes sense) instead of focusing the applied (active knowledge) scenarios based on real problems with lots of distracting clutter for life-like corporate problem-solving confusion. Again the book is good and it's probably just my lack of experience in these areas. It has very good coverage of PKI and SSO/Fed Id topics like SAML/XACML etc. which are a great help with my new support job. So that in itself is a big plus.

Simply taking another few weeks and re-studying these same books in similar ways will probably not be enough to pass next time. I think i would have to either take a class or search for some sources that might provide techniques on how to provide security solutions. Or maybe just re-read but with a new enlightened way. And of course OJT (but that takes so long!)

Actually had i gotten a one or a few more Q's right and passed i still don't think I would be ready to become an applied solutions guy (not a tech manager or architect), but not that I'd expect a single cert would lead directly to a new line of business anyway. To some degree my main focus is staying off the unemp line and add to my employability (at 50+, yeah, I think you probably get it). Regardless, i hate failing any exam.

Some drag and drops were easy and based on generic CIA, risk or other other basic book knowledge. And sure, there were a few shorter and more book-like (like most sec+ questions) MC questions, but not many. The simulations seemed mostly router/fw acl configs. A networking guy could probably breeze through it but darn again, not me.

Had i passed it i think my momentum would have almost forced me to head in the CISSP direction, seems that sec+ and casp are at least 50% in that direction if not more. Just that it's recognized everywhere and useful for getting almost any sec job. Almost required even just to get Tier1 support job in some industries, DC area esp.

Someone in this forum mentioned a while back that it has a little project+ cert style to it, maybe i should have taken that a little more seriously. Don't know project+ scope but does seem appropriate and worth looking into.

Not sure what exactly is next, but i have all these thick books now...and yes, i do have more knowledge for sure...

This is driving me crazy!

I'm running CentOS 6.4 on VirtualBox 4.2.12...

everything was running fine, I installed Guest additions and everything..upgraded the system (yum update..).etc

everything is smooth

but then all of a sudden, when I'm logged in, I can't type properly, I need to keep the key pressed to type like if I want to type "ls" I need to keep the "l" pressed for 2 seconds then I need to keep the "s" pressed.

This is strange because when I'm trying to login and type the password, it's working fine, but the moment I'm trying to type anything in the terminal it behaves like this!

ِAlso, if I go to single user mod or to text mode, I can type properly, so the problem is with GNOME session once I'm logged in

I have other VMs running (Solaris, RHEL6, ...etc), and this is the only machine that's giving me this problem.

Any clues? :bs:

This is driving me insane, I searched everywhere for a solution

Hi folks,
I have worked 11 years as a Network Maintenance Tech (lineman) for a cable company. My job duties have included everything from monitoring the NOC dashboard, splicing and repairing fiber, setting up nodes and basically diagnosing and repairing any cable or hardware from our headend to a customers premise.
Recently I applied to another department for an entry level networking position and I didn't get it.I was told by HR I had all the required experience for this position but lacked a degree.I have only a HSD and an A+ from 1999.I did study Net+ at the same time but didn't sit the test.
For the past 2 weeks I have been studying for the newer CCENT.My goal is CCENT,CCNA and either CCNA Sec or Wireless.I work 50 hours a week and have family commitments so a traditional B and M school will not fit my lifestyle at this time.
I see alot of people here favor the BSIT degrees here.Originally I was interested in the basic IT degree but now I'm starting to favor the Business in IT Management. While my goals are to advance my career in networking I don not have any inclination to be in management. If I am going to pursue the certs on my own wouldn't this give me a more opportunities to move up in the industry. My thinking is since I will be going for an entry level position is that the Cisco certs would suffice for knowing the fundamentals and the degree would just be a checkmark on my resume. And if the job market goes in the tank I feel that having a business degree will not have all my eggs in the same basket.
Thanks for your input.
