This is driving me crazy!

I'm running CentOS 6.4 on VirtualBox 4.2.12...

everything was running fine, I installed Guest additions and everything..upgraded the system (yum update..).etc

everything is smooth

but then all of a sudden, when I'm logged in, I can't type properly, I need to keep the key pressed to type like if I want to type "ls" I need to keep the "l" pressed for 2 seconds then I need to keep the "s" pressed.

This is strange because when I'm trying to login and type the password, it's working fine, but the moment I'm trying to type anything in the terminal it behaves like this!

ِAlso, if I go to single user mod or to text mode, I can type properly, so the problem is with GNOME session once I'm logged in

I have other VMs running (Solaris, RHEL6, ...etc), and this is the only machine that's giving me this problem.

Any clues? :bs:

This is driving me insane, I searched everywhere for a solution

It just sits there with status "Deleting". It's a corporate print server (Svr2008R2) so I can't just restart the spooler. Unless that's the only way. Any ideas?

Social Networking - getting too much?

It is hard to deny that most, if not all, are on sites like Twitter or Facebook. I dodged twitter so far but I am on Facebook.

All this social networking is starting to annoy me and I guess I am wondering if it is just me ;)

Over the last year or two, wherever you go, you are asked to like this, follow that and share the lot.

As a result, the more friends you got (I for one only have friends on Facebook I actually know), the more you get bombarded with adverts, suggested posts or pages.

Especially if a friend 'liked' some random page offering free stuff for of doing so.

Just yesterday, 7 out of the last ten posts were suggested nonsense. On the phone they are usually almost full page.

I am now at the point where I say 'enough is enough'. Personally I think it is getting too much. People complain about agencies snooping around your details, yet they post all sorts of personal information publicly on social networking pages.

Back in the day you were worried about someone stealing your identity. Surely now it is easier than ever before.

Assuming someone fills out every little detail sites like Facebook asks you to, put all your details on LinkedIn, you are likely to be able to know everything about a certain individual.

Where that person is born, went to school, the whole resume, date of birth, relatives and the list goes on.

How can people be afraid of people stealing your details if you give them to the whole world willingly?

Mmmmm. What's the point of this post now you ask? I presume it's a little bit of a rant but I am more interested really if I am the only one who thinks that this is getting too much?

I already uninstalled twitter and Facebook and don't intend to go back (you can't even easily close your account).

How about you?

Hi guys I have developed a interest in Linux and Open Source Technologies I wish to develop my skills further and to become more productive in my spare time and actually learn some stuff.

I am pretty comfortable using the command line and am willing to get my hands dirty. The first area of interest is Shell Scripting, Now I am not a programmer I don't think like a programmer or have the programmers godlike mentality Variables? For? Loops? it currently all goes over my head :)

So for somebody who knows nothing about scripting or programming concepts how do you begin to learn to script? am I out of my depth here? is there a suitable beginners course or tutorial or book out there? which starts you off with the basics i.e hello world and takes it a step further with introduction of variables etc.

Other Main Area of interest is Server Administration I have some spare hardware in which I was thinking of setting up File Server ( Sharing with win7 Host) FTP, Apache, and learning about advanced stuff like SElinux I will be using Centos.

How did you guys start with Linux? what kind of projects did you start with and how much time do you need to dedicate to it to develop a solid understanding.

Thanks for the help appreciate the insight :)

I finally upgraded, spent $300 at frys on ram, cpu and motherboard (had the rest)

anyways I have 2 questions, one I wasn't able to plug in the switch for my power on botton for my desktop (there is a push botton on the motherboard, wtf)

2. I got this AMD A6-5400K Trinity 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 65W Dual-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 7540D AD540KOKHJBOX - Newegg.com do they now have built in gpu's in the CPU? Obviously i dont think its as fast as a radeon hd 7970??

the intel core 2 duo didn't support virtualization for my home labs so i didn't want to spend that much on a new pc, hopefully this'll last me a couple years for a home lab, but i feel old finally upgrading after all these years

I am only asking out of interest really to see if there is some fancy feature I have not come across yet :)

Hello all.
I recently bought a home and I am setting up a projector in one of the rooms.
Since normally all end devices sit next to the screen (Blu-ray, Xbox, Nintendo etc) and projectors sit opposite the screen I have to come up with a way to get the data to the projector from across the room.

Here is a quick Photoshop image of what I am talking about.

I have CAT6a cable runs through the entire house and was thinking that I could use them to possibly extend the HDMI to run through the wall and ceiling to get to the projector.

The total distance should be about 20-25 feet.
For such a short distance would simple HDMI to CAT6 wallplates work?
Such as these?

MPLS Network bandwidth question

I have a question concerning MPLS bandwidth design. I started a new job a few weeks ago for an Architectural firm, so we do WAFS replication with dwg...

I have a question concerning MPLS bandwidth design. I started a new job a few weeks ago for an Architectural firm, so we do WAFS replication with dwg files using Globalscape WAFS (basically DFS with File Locking). So bandwidth is very precious to us. We are working on upgrading our mpls, and am not sure what we are going to is correct.

Our vendor is telling us the following:

Old MPLS
Main Site: 10mb
Site 1: 5mb
Site 2: 5mb
Site 3: 3mb
Site 4: 3mb
Site 5: 1.5mb

New MPLS
Main Site: 100mb
Site 1: 20mb
Site 2: 20mb
Site 3: 10mb
Site 4: 10mb
Site 5: 10mb
Site 6: 10mb (New site opening up soon)
Site 7: 10mb (Should open up within a year)
Site 8: 10mb (Should open up within a year)

Basically, as you can see, they are proposing a 1:1 ratio of remote site bandwidth to our main hub site. Is this a correct design? To me it seems to be way overkill. I am if you are saturating all links at the same time to require a 1:1 ratio hub/remote, then there are things going on that shouldn't be going on. I say this as with our current bandwidth, we don't saturate more than 50% at the hub site normally with WAFS/Email/Internet/FTP. I can see our main hub going to 30-40mb, and remote sites 10mb. Maybe our other two larger sites can go to 20mb, but even then I am not sure.

*Clarification: Our MPLS is a Mesh, but our replication is hub and spoke.

Last week was crazy. As the title says it involved all of those. Details below.

TechEd
The event was awesome. It was my first TechEd ever so I was building excitement weeks in advance.

Arrived Saturday afternoon and went out to explore New Orleans. Nice city. Plenty of food and booze options. Several touristy things are available although I couldn't do any of them. as most close by 5PM. Now I have an excuse to go back to NOLA.

I started Sunday AM with the pre-conference titled Lessons from the Field: Useful Hacker Techniques for Administrators. This was conducted by Paula Januszkiewicz, Hasain Alshakarti, and Marcus Murray, all security experts focusing on Windows technologies. It was an eye opener session showing exploitation techniques with tools such as gsecdump, mimikatz, CyberGate, FOCA, Core Impact Pro and others. They also provided tips on mitigation techniques for most of the things they showed. Very good session. Makes you realize you can't win the battle and just need to be ready to mitigate whatever threat affects your systems.

The regular conference went along Monday thru Thursday. I hit sessions including APTs, Exchange 2013, PowerShell, AD enhancements and others. Good content and great speakers. One of my favorite sessions was Hunting Malware with Mark Russinovich. He showed real examples on how the Sysinternals tools can help resolve malware issues that would be otherwise undetectable.

Got a chance to briefly chat with Rick Claus, Mark Russinovich (he even signed my Windows Internals book), and other very knowledgeable folks whose names I can't remember. Information overload is typical here.

They also had a ton of computers so you could do labs and experience MS products. I did half a dozen including Exchange and Lync high availability, DirectAccess, PowerShell, IPAM, and a few others. My experience was smooth, although some reported slowness I never experienced this. They also had 3 big rooms with instructor-led labs.

After being in line for 2 hours I had a chance to pick up two Surface devices at a heavily discounted price (RT for $99, PRO for $399). I opened up the PRO to play with it but I don't care for it at all. They will most likely end up on eBay or CL.

Great venue, great food, good content, but closing party was kind of lame. Overall a great experience.I'm hoping to make TechEd a yearly thing.

70-417
A few weeks ago I signed up for 70-417 to be taken onsite at TechEd. They had a 50% off offer so I couldn't resist. They even had several prep sessions (3 different ones covering 70-410 , 11, and 12) but I could only fit one in my schedule. The session was OK at best. The guy just red material from a PPT and try to give some tips. I ended up leaving early because I couldn't take his style. Too boring for me.

So I took the test Wednesday morning and passed. I got a t-shirt with "CERTIFIABLE" on the front and the MS logo on the back. A lot of people were asking me where I got it. I felt exclusive :-)

I scored in the mid 700's. Lowest score I've ever gotten. My weakest are was AD federation which was well covered in the test. This shows how doing multiple things at once affects you. I had TechEd, the Stanly VMware class, and GCWN in my mind. Multitasking sucks.

GCWN
As some of you may know I did the SANS work/study program last October and as a result got a voucher for a free GCWN attempt. Since it was about to expire my only option was to take it as soon as I came back from TechEd. Ended up taking it on 6/8 but did not pass. For some reason I don't understand yet I totally procrastinated with this and ended up doing ZERO studying. After 8 months since the course took place the details were just not there. I thought about cancelling the test but that would've meant wasting the voucher. At least now I've seen the test and know what a SANS exam looks like. This is my first failed exam ever but given I did not study I'm OK. Can't win them all.

So now I'm back to normal. Focusing on the Stanly class for now and hopefully taking VCP when summer dies down. I also changed roles at work and am getting adjusted to my new team. Will be posting about it soon. Fun times!

I was reading an article about the soon to come Aspire S7 Haswell update and a few people were complaining about the aluminum finish. A few were saying that laptops should come in more colors and move away from the aluminum look. I personally hate the piano black and love aluminum.

What everyone's take on this?
