I noticed today that on all my 2008 exams, including Server / Enterprise admin, I am a "Charter Member".

Didn't even know what it is .. now apparently I am amongst the first 5000 people who passed these.

Also according to the details online I was supposed to get some special letter or acknowledgement and certificate. Didn't get either (and don't really care any more).

Are there any other benefits I didn't get :) ?

Edit: Ah, that explains it

Charter Member status does not currently appear on a candidate’s transcript. We’d have to turn our systems upside down and backwards in order to support showing Charter status on transcripts. We are evaluating whether this change could be made at some point in the future.

I have been in the field for 2 years, first as a Field Tech at a Mom Pop shop, and now as a Help Desk/Field Tech at a bank. I was lucky to get my foot in the door, and then managed to learn a lot when I did. So, now, here I am, but I am wanting to do more.

I am studying for a two year degree at the local community college, but it is kind of lacking. A lot of the stuff that I am learning is stuff I have already learned from being on the job, so now I am looking elsewhere. I was thinking about trying for some certs, and then perhaps moving to WGU.

I hear that most people go for A+ and then Networking+.

I feel I am past the point that A+ is useful, and I tend to find Networking really dull. Perhaps I just haven't dug into it enough. Would it be best to set my teeth and dig into the Networking, so at least I have the fundamental basics down? I was also looking to do the 680 exam with Windows 7, but I heard that is difficult, and I would hate to try and learn something that I am not really ready for.

I posted about this in another area, but I feel a bit lost and confused. I am in the field, but a 2 year degree from the local community college feels useless, and I have no idea where I want to focus on in order to get a cert. If there are general paths that would be good until I somehow find a focus, that might be good? I am honestly not sure.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I'm Chris. I graduated college with a Bachelor of Technology (B.T) in Network Administration and an A.A.S in Computer Information Systems, but before I graduated, I needed to find an internship ASAP in order to get the credits so I ended up working in web development for 3 years as my first job right out of college and is what I'm doing right now. I'd really like to move up in my career and go back to my college roots because I find that System/Network Administration is still what I'd really like to do. Data centers have always fascinated me as well. The only problem is, I have no certifications and it seems kind of hard to find a job without any work experience in the field. It seems like the certifications help a lot and I'd like some advice on which certification to get first and which order I should get them. I was thinking of going for the A+ first and then the Network + or CCNA. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

I kind of wizzed through my MCSE 2012 Certification which makes me the paper MCSE everyone seems to hate. I have no problem with that. Dirty oil is better than none. :D

However, after posting here and talking to a few folks about my unique situation in the DC area I have decided to pursue either the Microsoft Cloud track or the CCNA Security Track.

This is my issue:

I want to actually learn something going down the CCNA track since I can't fluff it nor do I want to fluff it. The problem is, where I work they won't allow me to get into the networking side of things. They want me to stay in systems. I get paid well and I am not ready to leave yet.

How do I keep sharp on the Networking track especially since I can't touch their equipment? Sure I can buy my own, but if I am not using it every day at home to my benefit I get bored with it real fast. At least with a Server, I can store my files and data on it. I can have a home domain that I can use.

I forgot everything that I learned going down the Network+ track in 6 months and don't want to have that happen again if at all possible.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Hi All,

Just figured I would introduce myself to the forums. I'm a 23 year old guy from the Washington DC area and working towards my start in information technology. Well actually, I'm somewhat in the information technology sector now as a Technical Recruiter (I work for a competitor of TEKSystems, Robert Half, etc). I graduated from college in May 2012 with a BS in Marketing and I really do enjoy working as an IT recruiter, but working with so many tech professionals in DC has really sparked my interest in becoming one of them (you)!

So I decided to start making some big moves. I applied for a Masters of Science degree at Northwestern University and was accepted into their Information Systems program. I actually just finished my first class, Telecommunications Networking with an A. I'm taking SQL Database class next semester and Java programming following that (I'm taking classes while working full-time as a recruiter). After I finish my core classes, I'm going to work towards my concentration in Information Security and Networks.

After a good deal of thought and studying, I've decided to really make some headway towards a career in IT in the future. I just purchased Lammle's CCNA Study book last night and started reading. I'm hoping to complete the CCENT portion of the CCNA by September 1st and move along from there. Hopefully, it'll be the first step into a slow but well-thought out approach to becoming a network engineer.

Well, I just figured I'd introduce myself to the forums and if anyone has some advice to my journey, I'd love to hear it! Thanks and have a great night.

Hey Guys,

I'm kind of stuck in between jobs at the moment, I left a really good job in a really diverse environment for a job at Google which wasn't really all that I wanted (I'm a *nix System Admin, but the role was very much a Help Desk one). After leaving I've now struggled to find such a generous role in *nix (Junior Admin/Novice). I currently only have a Degree, I've always worked on Certs but never really finished them because work got in the way. I still live at home, so money is not really a problem and I seem to have a chicken-egg dilemma going on with not having the right experience/certs for the jobs I want, but having the experience which seems to be a recruiter turn off.

Should I just cut my loss, give up my temporary job that's not giving me any experience and just work solid for 3-6months of certs? I'm thinking about maybe just knocking out a LPIC1/2 and CCENT and maybe CCNA if I can fit it. Working a weekend job to just save up some pocket money for riding my Motorcycles and for my savings.

Thoughts?

I think this is my first post, I usually just browse posts. Thanks to all the posters, I've gotten great info while studying for certs.

My question is, would RDP over PPTP be a bad idea? I'm helping my mother in law gain access to her computer at her retail store from home or wherever. I bought a Cisco small business router (RV042) to setup an IPsec VPN to gain RDP access. The problem is that it doesn't work over Verizon 4G. (should have done my homework) She uses a hotspot at her house since broadband is not offered in her area. I've tried PPTP using my phone as a hotspot and it works fine. Although not as secure, I was considering using this. I would try and secure everything as much as possible with complex passwords, only allowing the newer more secure RDP clients, etc. Any thoughts? Any alternatives that would work over 4G? This is a small retail store.

Thanks.

-Sorry, meant to put this in off topic forum

A little background about me, No college degree (thought I did attend a few years), Will be 30 in a year. Been unemployed for a few years sadly. Was hired as a field service technician for a good company that requires nationwide travel to servicing hospital equipment, but outside of my control I was never scheduled to come in or sent out on assignment (I don't know why, step dad works there, but nothing he can do about it).... But that job looks good on my resume. With today's economy, I been frustrated with not being able to get a job.. I know some guys may not see it from my point of view, as there are always people working at mcdonalds etc, but it is really tough.

Now My personal hobby as always been pc hardware. Ever since I was a kid, if i wanted to play a pc game on my crappy IBM 486sx computer at the time, I had to tinker with it. upgrade parts etc. Today my pcs are watercooled and overclocked, I always mod them for gaming, so I am confident of my pc technical skills as well as software. I have lapped cpus, run raid 0 on my hard drives, overclocked the hell out of my cpu and gpus, volt modded an old video card. Had water leaks in my first attempts at watercooling, but it was all a good learning experience etc.

2010 I went to a local technical school for drafting, we used autocad. I passed that and am still paying the student loan on it, which sucks. That school i went to is under probation due to alot of prior students also reporting they where not able to get jobs (employers don't seem to value credentials from for-profit schools).

A few weeks ago I been thinking about getting A+ certified, in which I learned it is fairly easy to obtain and than i can go from there. I would be happy with a desk support job to get the ball rolling. Then maybe supplement it with another certificate or 2 to get out of entry level.

During a few old jobs that I had in offices, i recall how nice it would have been to be one of the IT guys lol. Though i never really pursued the career, though I have tried applying for jobs in help desk etc, to never get back any response.

I do have a few friends telling me that A+ is worthless and how they got jobs with nothing, of course that is luck of the draw today in my opinion, as today has so much more applicants and employers like to use something to weed out the number of applicants to make it easier on them to choose someone. If you guys have any other recommendations on certs I could check out, let me know. Appreciate it!

I am selling some of my stuff to purchase the A+ vouchers.

Well I am in the DC area and I work as a government contractor which is a whole different ball game from most of the country and world.

I hold my MCSE 2012, MCITP-EDA, Sec+, Network+, and A+.

I work as a Windows Systems Engineer. Employer will pay for the Microsoft track and the Cisco Track but that seems to be it until I am here for a year.

I am kind of tired of the Microsoft track because Prometric testing centers are 60 miles away from me but Vue centers are very close to me.

15 years in IT and I have hated just about every minute from Desktop Support, Desktop Engineering, and now working with Servers. My fault for picking a career path that I didn't like? Sure, no problem with that. No problem with getting into a profession that pays the bills either.

It took me every minute of 15 years to realize that I want to do one of a few things...become a "legal" hacker, penetration tester, or forensics person but my need to pay bills comes first. I think that I'd also like to try my hand at management even if it is managing entry level folks at a helpdesk.

Here are some goals:

1) Pick certifications that continue to increase my job security.

2) Pick certifications that can secure my pay rate. (Pay is important to me, I have some unpleasant debts that will last me a very long time).

3) Pick certifications that might allow me to transition into one of the above fields without taking a large pay cut.

4) Pick certifications that will tend to get me paid as much possible as compensation for doing what I hate. (I enjoy non-IT hobbies in my free time so that helps).

The Cisco certifications are free...I guess that I should just pursue those before a year has elapsed to assist with goals 1&2.

I am not sure if the Cisco certs will help with my goal #3 and/or help even a drop as far as getting me into the part of IT that interests me.

Also...does anyone know if the IT career path that I'd like is even fathomable without having anything above a Top Secret Clearance (which I hold)?

It seems like everything in the DC area needs an SCI or higher to perform Forensics, hacking, or penetration testing for the government. I am not SCI eligible.

Thanks for any help or positive ideas.
