Very relieved to have passed my 70-640 on Saturday afternoon, and after the feeling of euphoria I'm back to punishing myself by deciding on my next step.

My main concern is that I spent the best part of 6 months reading and labbing and still found this to be a surprisingly hard exam. I was planning to move on to the 70-642, or perhaps 646 but these look even harder!

I'm wondering if it might be worth taking a step back from MS exams and doing my first Citrix or VCP qualification? I feel mentally exhausted after the 70-640.

That's the first exam in my life I've ever failed. What a blow to my confidence! I took about a month of on and off study using the MS Press 2nd edition book, some Technet articles and CBT Nuggets. Previously, my strategy was to read at least two books and Technet for each MS exam I took. I was convinced that 70-642 is much easier than 70-291 and 680, so I didn't take the test seriously. I read the book, did some labs, took a lot of notes, but only used Technet for a few topics. I scored about 60 to 80 percent in every area of the exam. The most difficult topics were DNSSEC and DFS - stuff that I didn't even lab. There were also quite a few questions on using command line utilities.

I would say that the MS Press book covers about 60 percent of the exam material. CBT Nuggets, on the other hand, were mostly useless. They are good for a general overview of topics, but it would be impossible to pass the exam relying on them.

I'm planning to retake the exam next week. So glad I have a second shot voucher! Now it's time to hit Technet.

have any of you guys studied port numbers for the 642?

I know I memorized an entire Table when I did my Network+ and basicly went in to take that test and wrote the table down on the paper you can write on.

For a long period of time, our users were using WinXP. There were a number of issues when using roaming profiles which included corrupted profiles and PST files that became difficult to use or corrupted themselves. So we decided to get rid of roaming profiles once we rolled out Win7. While we were using roaming profiles, we were also using network Homefolders configured in each users Active Directory profile. We kept those... but now the new issue is, people have a habit of creating an saving files to their desktops, which I believe is putting them at risk of losing that data. I find it hard to trust educating them on where to create/save files and would rather not interrupt their behavior anyway. What would be a good way to avoid roaming profiles while keeping the homefolders and providing some way of maintaining/retaining this level data, even for a select group of users?

MAY-06-2013
10:30 am

I walked into the Prometric Testing Center feeling pretty confident about this test. This feeling of confidence was backed up by the fact that i have NEVER failed any of my previous Microsoft Exams (or any exams for that matter), and there have been quiet a bucket full of 'em in the past. So yeah, this feeling of 'invincibility' grew up on me. Everything goes as usual. The registration, the NDA, the IDs and the seat allocation. The instructor then gets everything setup, and a couple a clicks later i am looking at Microsoft's Survey. Bullishly i get the survey out of my way, didn't like em. Never have. And then - BEGIN TEST.

This thing pops-up on my screen and it immediately hits me! I feel something is wrong, terribly wrong. I have NEVER seen this before. "What am i looking at?". It takes me 2 minutes to find out where to look for the 'question', let alone the answers. This massive pile of questions, this 'Jeffrey Archer Novel' thing on my screen, apparently called 'testlets', just sat there, mocking me. And then i get one out of my way, somehow, not very happy with the answers, and then the normal bunch of questions come up. Couple of hours later, the testlets were back! One thing i never paid attention to is the Exam is 4 Hours Long! And it had a good reason! I just didn't know it.

A hop, skip and a boat ride away awaits my results. FAILED! 616/1000. I couldn't accept it. I never felt so demotivated! I just walked straight out and went into work.

For some reason - I had registered for a Second Shot! I have only done it in the past when i sat for 70-270. My first MS Exam (MCP). Turns out - i didn't need it then. I don't know why I did it only this time, but i was grateful that i did.

MAY-14-2013
11:00 am

I'll cut the story short. 760/1000. PASSED! Again the same wave of testlets, and neither one repeated from the earlier exam as i recalled. This test is the most difficult i have ever faced - not Technically! The patience it requires with all these pile of information put in-front of you is just annoying to begin with. Ask me a question, give me my options, and get it over with! But NO! Turns out, this one will take more out of your patience and energy than anything else.

MCITP - EA Complete. I will NEVER forget this exam!

I want to branch out to MCSE 2012: Private Cloud. BUT FIRST! - CITRIX!

....
