Thoughts on the GIAC 2700

Passed the GIAC 2700 exam on Saturday with a 81.33 score, and used a little over one hour. This test was much closer to the CISSP and CISA than any others in the WGU MSISA program, for sure.

After much thought, I did the open-book material I took in the exam a little different than Agent47 here: http://www.techexams.net/forums/sans...xam-today.html Although I am grateful to him for giving me ideas on what to research and be familar with.

Maybe because my brain processes information differently, I had a hard time making 'notes' in the same manner, so i wound up taking two binders into the exam - one with the verbiage of 27001, 27002, and 27005, and another with more detailed, topic specific information such as wikipedia articles, a few technote pages, etc. (I don't know if listing everything I took in my binders is appropriate or not; if a mod permits, I will make a list.)

On the practice exams, I used my binders maybe a total of 10 questions out of the 150, and scored 74 and 93. On the actual exam, maybe paranoia played a factor, but there were quite a few that required me to look up specific things in the standards, and I probably would not have passed without those, for sure. Probably 40-50% I had to confirm. Put all your docs in plastic sleeves (it takes forever but is worth it!) and I grouped my printed topics into sections (like legal, project management, risk management, etc) which was invaluable in locating information quickly.

I honestly didn't study a whole lot; I DID read 27001 and most of 27002 (it gets old after a while) and 27001 was actually far more useful for me. I didn't really use any outside resources other than the controls, and what I had in my binders, but I also have CISSP and CISA certs, and a fair amount of experience, especially in C&A (some of my previous jobs included bank auditor, and then DIACAP consultant for the USAF.) I also got some ideas for what to have in the binder from Passing the G2700 ISO 27001/27002 certification: What Materials you will need for the Exam., and I had far more than what I needed, but I wanted to be well-prepared.

As far as certification tests go, this is one of the more challenging. It would be a helluva lot hard if they made it longer; it is quite taxing mentally, much like the CISSP or CISA.

Hello everybody,I hope to learn from others experiences.

I have read other posts with situations similar to mine which have helped me a great deal. I would like to get more personal advice though so here I go:

A little about myself(I have tried to keep it abbreviated to keep you guys from stopping reading my post till the end):

+10 years in IT, most of them in Portugal, some abroad.- Most of my experience has been as a programmer in different platforms/languages
- A lot of experience as a Database Admin & programmer
- Some years of experience as a freelance internet consultant, touching different areas, such as web development and integration, hosting services, web scraping programming in Java & Javascript(having had to deal with extensive use of proxies and anonimization)
- Some work experience with Linux & Windows boxes administration

- I don´t have a College Degree. I started working in IT in the 90´s after some very specialized training given by a big IT comany to cover booming demand.
- My knowledge of Networks & Security is very limited.

Right now I am at a turning point because internet consultancy at the freelance level is not working for me any more. I have allways been very attracted to Internet Security in general and to IT Forensics specifically since I started knowing about it for some years.

So I have decided to completely recycle myself and I want to devote some time full-time to get training aimed at gaining high quality knowledge and some certifications of that knowledge to be marketable and fit to work in the IT Security sector and maybe eventually in Computer Forensics area. I want to do this as quick and as effectively as possible, but establishing a good knowledge base that allows me to succeed both personally and professionally in this new career path turn.

So after a lot of digging I have my eyes specifically into the SANS OnDemand training, and this is what I have decided to do so far(and here is where your experiences and opinions might help me validate my decisions). In the following order:

1) Take the SANS “SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style” OnDemand course
2) Prepare and sit for the GSEC Cetification exam

3) Take the SANS “SEC560: Network Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking” OnDemand course
4) Prepare and sit for the GPEN Certification exam

5) Take the SANS “FOR408: Computer Forensic Investigations - Windows In-Depth” OnDemand course
6) Prepare and sit for the GCFE Certification exam

7) At this point in time, ideally, be in a position to be higly marketable for the booming IT Security sector and get a job. In my country, Portugal, we are about 2 years behind in comparison to more highly advanced countries in this field.8) Once I would hopefully be working in IT Security and having a broader and more experienced perspective, (and ideally having my employer pay for some training) maybe get a very advanced course, depending on the direction taken by my career, like:

- SANS “FOR508: Advanced Computer Forensic Analysis and Incident Response”
or
- SANS “SEC660: Advanced Penetration Testing, Exploits, and Ethical Hacking”

I am ready to hear any opinion on my situation and plans, its logic, feasability, etc...

I am also very interested in hearing about anybody that has taken any of the mentioned courses and prepared the corresponding certification to have an idea on how much time I should plan to devote for each of them, considering that I will be dedicating full-time to the training and exam preparation.

Thank you very much in advance!
Joao:)

I've had my GSEC for over the course of a year and been aggressively looking for an infosec job for the past 3 months. On multiple occasions, I have been asked what the GSEC is and most of the time no one seems to recognize the cert.

Certainly, they all know what the CISSP is, but I'm not sitting for that exam for another two months. Honestly, 3/4 of the CISSP is in the GSEC and the only reason I am obtaining the CISSP is to get recognized easier. Doesn't add much to what I already know.

I'm starting to question whether having spent $6,000, a week of my own vacation to attend the bootcamp, spending countless hours studying and passing the exam was worth anything.....

Since the SANS INST. grants a masters degree could student loans work?
Would the 401 course be a good place to start?
I really want to go to SANSFIRE in DC and any advice would be appreciated.

Currently I hold A+ and Security+ and working towards MCSA Server 2008 (70-640 June 7)
