Default "erase nvram" and "erase nvram:"

Simple question. On some routers, I can issue the command "erase nvram", but not on others. Why is that?

there is a few of these inconsistencies across devices... guess it can come down to the IOS used and the era of the device used.. older ones may favor a different method etc.

Could be that the engineers changed through the programming stage, or just wanted to mix things up a bit. its similar on switches with delete and erase commands
