Default Unable to reset Cisco 7940 phone to factory default

I am not able to reset a Cisco 7940 (Sip) to factory default.
I am following the steps listed below and every variation of it. I never get the message "Reset key sequence detected". Any ideas?? Thanks.

    #####################################
Simply hold down the # key while you power-cycle the phone. (If you already have the SIP firmware loaded, simply press * and 6 and Settings at the same time, and the phone will reboot. Then press and hold the # key while it boots.)
After a second or two, the phone display will say:
    Reset key sequence detected
The headset, mute, and speakerphone lights will cycle. Now, simply press the following keys:
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 #
Now, the phone will ask you whether or not you want to save your network configuration. I usually press 2 for no.
    Save network cfg? 1=yes 2=no
    The display will then say:
    Factory reset initiated
and the phone will continue to boot.

    Here's the Cisco link

Resetting 7900 Series IP Phones to Factory Defaults [Cisco Unified IP Phones 7900 Series] - Cisco Systems

If for some reason you can't get that to work, here's a method that will reset the network settings to default:

On the phone, go to settings, network configuration

    Unlock the settings with * * #

Punch in the number 33 on the keypad, which will take you to the Erase Configuration setting.

    Select Yes

This will reset the network configuration. That's not exactly the same thing as resetting to the factory defaults, but should be enough in most cases.
