Default Requirements for taking CCNP/Acquiring the Cert?

I took two years of Cisco CCNA in school and acquired that certification. Right now, I have access to CCNP semesters 1-4 and I plan to enroll in the class over the next two years. It seems to me that that is too long to waste.

So my question is, can I study the CCNP materials on my own and take the exam whenever I so please? Or do I need certain proof that I had enrolled in a training course?
