The process certainly takes a few months just to get contacted for an interview in DC

Yeah, I forget exactly when I submitted my app and didn't remember getting any notice about being forwarded for consideration but I got invited to the interview somewhere between 4-6 months after applying.

Echo what 7lowe said, I was invited to the OA several months after I applied. Additionally, as you progress through the hiring process you're not informed where you are or how you're progressing. Once you are put on the register OR they end your candidacy, you'll be informed.

Interesting and frustrating process, for sure.

No joke, I got the invite and was like "What the hell is the Foreign Service?" (When I applied I was applying for literally every IT job on USAJobs.gov that I even remotely qualified for.)

For those who are currently are IMS and or those who have passed the OA,

Any tips on how to answer the questions during the Structured Interview and if the memo should list a resolution for each issue presented in the scenario? How did you all structure your answers? I had an opportunity that I blew last year and missed the cutoff by .05 points and I know it was both the memo and SI.

    Thanks

JoJoCal19, they do higher up do the GS 13-14 pay band for Infosec positions, but there aren't many of these spots around and often requires knowing someone to get in. The Paybands go higher once you're in, but I know for a fact they do hire for GS-13 spots. Keep an eye out on USAJOBs for that.

Spot on, but the "who you know" factor is huge when it comes to pretty much all Fed openings, even those GS-9 and 10s.

    For anyone thinking of applying:

Yes, the salary starts low but don't forget you aren't paying for housing or basic utilities when you're assigned overseas and you don't pay tax on that benefit. Depending on where you're from, that can equal 30k or salary.

Foreign service has more in common with the military than with normal government. You have "rank in self" so as you go from job to job, you always keep your pay grade. With most other government jobs (GS), people get paid based on the rank of the job.

Most infosec jobs are contracted out but there are a few GS (see above) government managers. If you want to be an infosec govvie, keep an eye on USAjobs. That said, each embassy has an IMS in charge of infosec and there's even a Dept. of State award (one recipient per year, $5000 prize) for infosec.

Thanks for this! Do you know what foreign locations are available? My wife and I are interested in moving to Europe (she's from there) and I'm always looking for opportunities.

Pretty much anywhere there is a US Embassy/Consulate you could get assigned. However when you join you sign up to be "worldwide available", meaning you can be assigned anywhere in the world.

For IRM you get your assignment (aka Flag Day) the third and final week of new hire training/orientation. After that you go to tradecraft school for x number of weeks before you are shipped off to Post.

For applicants with families, do they take that into consideration when assigning posts? Just curious if someone with a family could get stuck in a not so ideal Middle East or African location.

Again, I go with when you sign up you agree to be "worldwide available", so you could get assigned to one of those locations.

That being said, only your first two tours are "directed" - ie the Dept. assigns you to a Post. You do get the opportunity to "lobby" to your assignments officer on why you are bidding on certain Posts. That is when you say "I am bidding X, Y, Z as my top three because of family/school/whatever". And most assignments officers take (or at least should) that into heavy consideration, they don't want to assign someone to carjackistan who has a family and their kids cannot go there. That is going to lead to an unhappy employee. After your first two directed assignments, it's all about who do you know/how well you can lobby and sell yourself to a Post - why you are the best person for the job. The more time you have in the Department, the more contacts you have and that goes a long way to getting one of the more popular Posts (think Western Europe).

I have a family and all of my bidding has been about what is best for them. On my first two assignments I can say I used the "I have school aged kids" argument and it was taken in to heavy consideration. My next tour we are going to the Middle East - but the location is excellent for families and has one of the best international schools. I had some contacts who put in some good recommendations for me and I was their top choice. I was also in the running for a very nice Post in Westernish Europe but I was their #2 choice. It comes down to your reputation and who do you know.

I've heard there are some great locations/hidden gems in Africa. So don't discount those places.

*To add: We also have what is called "fair share" bidding. That is every 5(?) years you have to bid on a Post with a hardship differential of 20%. This is to try keeping things as fair as possible and keep people from spending their entire career in "easy" Posts. You can Google what the differentials are for Posts to get an idea of the 20% hardship locations. Don't fret 20%, there are some pretty nice 20% hardship locations (but those get heavily bid).*

45 to 67k? Kind low salary, the Fed benefits aren't as good as they used to be, to make up for lower starting wages.
Still searching for the corner in a round room.
