Thank you. I've been very fortunate. And yes - it's the same company. I've been at the same company through various acquisitions for the past 7 or 8 years. I've lost track to be honest.

It sucks because i am already getting older and still at the bottom of the food chain.
If I am reading this correct then you are around 31 with a couple years of IT experience.
This is not to old! Good Luck

P.S. I'm 40 and looking to start my first IT job in the next year.

i noticed that you started as a software guy, not a networking. do you think that a networking related position can be at the top of food chain?

I very rarely run into anyone that has a network or systems background in senior technology management. But that could just be the nature of the industry that I'm in. I work in financial services so technology managers tend to have software development backgrounds. Probably because we have to be aligned with the business and network and systems roles are not close enough to the business.

If you are looking to start your IT career, you should look into some certifications. Reference CompTIA's certification tracker to start to plan out your track for certifications. CompTIA Career Pathways

I know and I have planned to earn certain certifications before I graduate, but didn't knew about that career pathways link. Thanks!

NetworkNewb: There are a lot of underpaid joats in the twin cities. I'm also one of them for a smb making a bit less than you. It's my first it job and a great learning experience. The guy I'm replacing, who's made a 20 year career of being a joat has told me not to get stuck in that position. Even with his experience he's barely making ends meet.

45K is comfortable for some areas of the cities like northern, but if you live around the hottest it spot, around edina, it barely pays the bills.

Infosec jobs are starting to flourish around here. There's more hits for cissp then for mcsa and ccna. Unfortunately most are looking for 5+ years experience.

Also read a lot of local companies are bringing their IT back inhouse because it's become cheaper than outsourcing. Not sure if that's good or bad for those in our position.
