    Default VI in Debian 9

    HI Team,
I have found that using vi in Centos (6.9 & 7.0) the keystroke manipulation works just as the it is supposed to with no issues (so far anyways).

In Debian 9, right from the get go, keystrokes add characters to the line, incorrect spacing, and sometimes no action happens after keystrokes? The only thing that seems to work without issue is the "esc" :q! to get out without screwing up the files that I want to edit. Nano works all right but I do want to use vi whenever possible.

Anyone else see this issue? I do believe my keyboard is correct in the installation but ....??

    Thanks
    Steve

Agreed. Both vi and vim suck, but they are on the objectives. Of the two, vim sucks slightly less.

    Slightly.

So I am discerning it is not my keyboard or keyboard selection.
I installed vim on all three machines as suggested.

For the Comptia Linux+ tests, does the test mandate one use vi for some solutions or is one allowed to use vi, vim or nano?

    thanks All

The test is conceptual. Know what the basic commands are (write and quit, move left, right, up, down in a file, etc.).

It really isn't to the level of detail you are setting yourself up for.
