Default Custom Application Directory Partition problem

    Hi all

I am curently studying for 70-291 and have problems creating application directory partitions.

This is the command i type in

    dnscmd dc1 /createdirectorypartition MYdns.cheynetech.com

dc1 being the name of my domain controller and cheynetech being the domain i have setup.

    I get this error

    Create directory partition failed: MYdns.cheynetech.com
    status = 9906 (0x000026b2)

    Command failed: DNS_ERROR_DP_FSMO_ERROR 9906 (000026B2)

I have searched google and found minimal info on this problem. Some posts say its a FSMO error but my dcdiag passes this test

I am running this on my root domain

    any help appreciated

    dcdiag and netdiag below

    dc diag

I think the problem just might be with DNS

If you go into the DNS console, are all the records present and correct? You can restart the net logon service or do a dcdiag /fix and/or netdiag /fix. You should check your event logs to see what errors you're getting in there.

you gotta love the humor lol

Right i did what you recomended. I had tried dcdiag /fix before

    Still getting the same error

If i check the DNS event viewer i get this error

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: DNS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 4015
    Date: 09/10/2008
    Time: 23:19:26
    User: N/A
    Computer: DC1
    Description:
The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is "00002199: SvcErr: DSID-030A09F3, problem 5001 (BUSY), data 8610". The event data contains the error.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    Data:
    0000: 33 00 00 00 3...

From that error it seams more like an active directroy problem but its working fine.

all NS and A records are in DNS as required

Have you tried restarting the DNS service or restarting the machine? Make sure the DNS service is running.

    Is this a new installation?

    hello dynamik

Yea thats the first thing i check. DNS was running so i restarted the service just incase. bold booted the box to just incase

The install is a few months old. Its just my test lab. Everything else seems to be working fine apart from being able to create application directory partition

test labs is just 2 servers each with Active directroy and dns installed running primary Active directroy intergrated zones. Both on the same switch and subnet

All the DNS problems in diagnostics as well?

You may want to try this on both machines:
    David Grant (Last update 4/12/2005):
I corrected the error by doing the following:
    1. Click Start -> Administrative Tools -> Component Services.
    2. Click the "+" next to Component services to expand it.
    3. Right click "My Computer" in the right window pane and select Properties.
    4. Click the MS DTC Tab.
    5. Click the "Security Configuration" button, a dialog box appears. Click "OK".
    6. Click "OK" on the "My Computer Properties" box; this will take you back to the console.
    7. Right click "My Computer" and select "Stop MS DTC" (this stops the MSDTC service.
    8. Again, right click "My Computer" and select "Start MS DTC".
By following the above steps, it appears that this sets the MS DTC defaults resolving the error messages. Check the event log to verify that the problem is gone. You might also want to restart the server to verify this.
That seemed to fix a similar problem in some other thread I came across.

Do you have the latest service packs and updates?

i ge the same error on the second DC when creating the partition. Both machines are fully patched.

Tried that suggestion but it made no diffrence.

I am stumped on this one

Think its time for some DNS Debugging

Do you have more than one domain? If so, are all your servers GCs? If not, is your Infrastructure role living on a GC?

Do repadmin /syncall. Any RPC errors?

Do a netdom query /domain:<domain> fsmo -------- make sure that the server that holds the fsmo role(s) is online and responding to other servers. If not, seize the role on an active server.

Make sure time zones are set accordingly and are within 5 minutes of each other. If you notice time issues, try doing the following two commands to make sure:
    w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update
    w32tm /resync
restart windows time service to be safe

Do you have multiple interfaces on your DC? If so, disable unneeded interfaces so you have 1 total interface and go in DNS and make sure that multiple ips aren't registered for the DC.

hi all, thanks for all your help

    The problem is now resolved.

After running repadmin /syncall as royal suggested i got some errors.

I checked my services and the RPC locator service was not running. Started this and everything worked fine

Thanks again for all your help
