Don't worry about scoring low on the pre-assessment. I personally thought it was difficult, but that's a good thing! Ensures you are ready and not taking easy practice tests.

I scored an 83% on the pre-assessment, but that was after reading All-In-One Sec+ start to finish and reviewing it a little bit. I was disappointed too, at first, thinking that was barely passing if it was representative of the real exam...but then again I realized, by taking that pre-assessment, reading Darril's book, and bumping that score way up, I can basically guarantee a pass on the first try. It's totally worth it.

Not to mention, Darril's book really does help clarify a few things for me that I barely grasped before. The All-In-One book is more detailed but sometimes it provides the details without the overview (even if the overview is all that is needed for sec+) - thus making the concept difficult to understand if you don't already know it. DGs book provides the overview which can really help clear things up.

Should be taking the test this upcoming saturday. I'm through 6 or 7 chapters in DGs book and will knock out the remainder these next couple days...they go by pretty quickly if you've looked at other material previously - just filling in the gaps.

Ahh ic ic. Well I work from 8 to 12 that day and my test is at 1:00. I will bring my notes to work and read but I do not have a kindle then again I cannot bring my laptop or kindle or cell phone into my workplace.

Did you take the final exam right after you finished chapter 10?

Not immediately after. I am pretty sure there was at least two days before I finsihed...I believe that on the day prior to the exam, the only thing I did was the "final" exam...then went to bed early. (Cause I had to leave early to get to NYC via train and ferry). Brought my kindle to go over some stuff. But I didn't want to cram the day before...I either knew it or I didn't, and if I didn't, then cramming that day was NOT going to help me. Better to do it a few hours prior anyhow.

On the final exam, I got 90 out of 100....that was good enough for me.

hey guys, kinda been ghosting on the forums for awhile but should probably participate more often

anyways, I just passed my MS 70-291 finally after 1 try and passed. My next step was to take 70-293 but I think I want to take the security cert before they instate the madatory 3yr renewal.

I have been seeing several references to this darryl gibson book and went to amazon. The kindle price for 10 bucks is hard to pass up in regards to the book. Is there any noticable differences vs the actual book? like is the practice exams only included when you buy the paperback or do you get that too for kindle edition? is there anything left out if i buy the kindle?

    feedback much appreciated!

I bought the Kindle version before it went down in price. LOL. The practice exams are the assessment (which I did not take), the end of chapter tests, and the "final" 100 question exam at the end of the book, that is very, very much like what the "real" exam is like. I took the end of chapter exams at the end of the book...scored well on them, and then took the final a couple of days after I was done with the whole book. Got 90% on it. Took Security+ the next day.

You don't need a separate CD or anything like that....the Kindle resource is really all you need. Not bad for $10. (No, I'm not kidding.)

I bought the book from Amazon for like $37.00 or something. $10 for the kindle sounds like a good deal. I dont have a kindle, but I do have an iPad. I looked for the iPad version of the book, and it was listed around $25.00. So I just stuck with the physical book. I honestly only read a couple of chapters, and highlighted all of the answers in the back of the book. I ended up passing with a 791. I am sure I could have done better, but all I needed was a passing score.

Many people on these forums buy both. Personally I paid the $30 for the paper book and that was it. But if you are a person who likes to have both this book is still worth $40.

Couldn't you have gotten the Kindle App on your little iPad and read the book that way? That would have only been $9.99 for you.

They buy both, presumably, because the Kindle version they buy is for the PC app.

I actually have a Kindle device so I only needed that....was very comfortable to read. My collection of IT books is growing....I'm now reading Mastering Windows Server 2008 R2 on my Kindle. (Well, starting tonight).

I didnt know there was an app for that. I didnt buy the ebook version at all. I just stuck with the physical book, which I barely studied.

Well im through Chap 4, going to start 5 today. I just did Network+ recently so when I saw chapter 3 was all networking I just skipped right to the chapter questions and scored an 86% (and that's only because i went to fast and missed one question as having multiple answers, the question was one that i did know and rightfully should have gotten). You REALLY have to read the question, like REALLY, I find i get into a groove of answering and i'll fly right over the (Choose all that apply), or the (Choose two) that sit at the end. Will end up screwing me.

So far though, excellent book, I'm really glad I got it.

Test is scheduled for Sept 4th.

Well, LIFE happened, a family member passed, and a few other things and I'm not where I want to be, I think I will be pushing it back a week, but that should be it.

Sorry to hear that. It's ok to take some time off but it is really easy to take too much time off, so be careful.

Yeah I know, thats why i figured one week would be good enough, i dont plan on it being like black8router's trek, as I do want to get it done before the end of the year to seal in my trifecta (tri-force?) as permanent before 2011.

No dude, family is always #1. If you have to even take more time, won't be a bad deal, as you want to make sure you concentrate on the exam.

Just do what you have to do; 12/31/2010 as of this post isn't here yet.

I just ordered Darril's book via amazon prime (free 2 day shipping, woot woot) so I will be studying in no time!"

It's required that I get Sec+ before the end of the year for my new job as a DoD contractor!

Yeah I suppose you are right, Ive already postponed it to next friday, though now I dont know if I will make even that, again i still want the pressure of the date scheduled bearing down on me to motivate the studying, but I shouldn't forgo family visitations during this time just for the exam, and vice versa. i'll consider rescheduling again and perhaps pushing it back another few days or another week.

It'll be ok...just be with your family and then you can try for either next Friday or heck, even the end of the month. You just don't want a tragic loss to be the reason you missed a question or two. After a respectable time has passed, you can pick up where you left off I'm sure.

I'm going through a similar issue myself (dealing with a burnt down house). Between insurance, contractors, getting rent paid in the meantime, work, etc., etc., it is a very time consuming ordeal...and it took away from my 70-642 studying. By Friday/this weekend, I should be back in the groove. I even had to take a separate exam on "Problem Solving and Critical Thinking...." I passed that, but man was my mind elsewhere.....

Mind you, that doesn't compare to a death in the family...(as no one was hurt), but the best laid plans in the world sometimes doesn't help for moments like these.

Just wanted to reiterate how awesome this book is. So far I'm 300 pages in and have learned a LOT in such a short amount of time. I was studying for Network+ with Myers AIO and put that on hold as this is a much better read for me. Darril breaks it down so it's easy to comprehend! Gonna finish the book this week and then gotta get my boss to order me a voucher!

As an update on my trek, i am taking the test tomorrow morning, im just sitting here reviewing some of the areas i missed on the final exam. Got an 88% on the final, up from 63% on the pre-assessment, probably will skim the 3 chapters i was weak in, 4, 7 and of course 9 and get a good nights sleep. I don't have to take the exam til 9am so that will be sleeping in for me, and I'll have lots of time in the morning for breakfast and light review. Hope to post a pass tomorrow morning.
