    Default 680 & 685

I have passed comptia a+ 801 a few weeks ago and going to be taking 802 in the next week or so and I feel confident (famous last words) however i decided to explore my options for my next certificate.

so i was just curious, i've had a look around on the internet but couldn't find anything, has the retirement date for these exams been announced? or is pointless doing these exams anymore, with windows 10 ones being released shortly.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Col,

There are no plans to retire 70-680 or 70-685 but you cannot gain Windows 7 MCSA if you pass them both.

You will gain MCTS certification for each individual exam taken.

You would be better off taking 70-687 and 70-688 (the Windows 8.1 exams) as these two will get you Windows 8.1 MCSA and if you then pass 70-697 (Configuring Windows Devices and Apps) you will then get Windows 10 MCSA.

Bear in mind though that the Windows 8.1 MCSA retires end July 2016.

    Hope this helps.

No plans to expire the MCTS exams just yet. As culpano explained you will not get an MCSA for these, just 2 MCTS's. You also won't get an MCITP as that has been retired for the 685 set.

However, if you decide to do the 686 instead you can still obtain the MCITP for the Administration title. You will also have the chance to upgrade it to the MCSA and MCSE for Windows Server 2012. This option is not available for the 685.

I would highly recommend going for the 686 after your 680 as you will have more titles and more chances to upgrade compared to the 685, but it depends what you need for your career.
    2018/2019 Goals: MCSA: Windows Server 2016 (70-740, 70-741, 70-742)
2019/2020 Goals: MCSE: Cloud Platform and Infrastructure (70-744) | RHCSA
