I was able to build an image from scratch in the 70-680 but always struggled with the deployment side, especially SCCM. I'm working in a new environment now which uses SCCM, so I think that gave me an extra push for the 686. I would advise practicing from start to finish again and again, and create a mini VM environment with a few server 2008/windows 7 VMs that you can deploy to.
Currently working at: MCSA: Windows 10 (70-698, 70-697)
2018/2019 Goals: MCSE: Mobility, MCSA: Windows Server 2012, RHCSA

Yep that's what I'm doing. Going start to finish just using WAIK, then with WAIK/MDT/WDS. Been through once, probably do that a couple more times. Then have a go on measureup and see how I feel about it.
